Lens Impression

製造本数は3,200本以下とかなり珍しいレンズであるが、中古マーケットでは比較的眼にする機会は多い。

初期ビオゴンやスーパーアンギュロンに代表される前後対称型で、レトロフォーカスではない。2ndタイプは対称型とレトロフォーカス型の折衷となり、3rdタイプから本格的にレトロフォーカスとなった。この1stタイプがWetzlarデザインで、2ndタイプがCANADAデザインであるが、1stタイプにおいても実際の製造は両方のものがある。
非常に複雑なレンズ構成であり、9枚というレンズ枚数の多さから、「9枚玉」とも言われる。2314921以降にはM5-CL用に測光セルが出ないように加工されているものがある。レンズが後方にかなり出っ張っているが、この個体はライカM9にも普通に使用できた。

描写に関しては、開放ｆ2.8では比較的有意な口径食による周辺光量低下があるが、それでもズマロン28ｍｍのf5.6の場合と大きな差異はなく、f2.8という大幅な大口径化を果たしたレンズ描写としては優れている。
開放でも中心部はシャープでコントラストも高く、周辺部で諸収差によりややソフトな描写となる。f5.6でほぼ全面で均一になるようだ。開放時の周辺光量低下とわずかなソフト効果は、このレンズの描写の立体感を他の28mmレンズ以上に人間の視覚に与えてくれる。そういう意味では、数値以外のレンズ描写の味を求めるには最適なレンズと言える。

The number of production is less than 3,200. Very rare lens, but we can find rather easily in 2nd hand camera market.

The composition of the lens is symmetrical type which is represented by early Biogon or Super Angulon and others. The composition was changed into the intermediate design between Symmetrical and Retrofocus on the 2nd, and Retrofocus on the 3rd. The 1st type was designed at Wetzlar and in Canada on the 2nd, but the both productions are existed in the 1st.
The lens composition is complicated and using many glasses of 9 which makes its nickname as ‘Kyu-mai-dama’. Some 1st type were modified its mount to perform Leica M5 or CL not to appear a lever of metering cell avoiding incidents. It was no problem this lens to use on Leica M9.

The description of this 1 st type Elmarit 28mmf2.8 shows the lowereing of light intensity around peripheral area because of vignetting. But the level of light lowering is almost same level of Summaron 28mm at f5.6. I think the development between the generations from f5.6 to f2.8 is apparent.
The center part shows sharp and high contrast image with a little soft expression around peripheral part because of various aberrations. Lowereing of light intensity and aberrations around peripheral part at full aperture makes strong impression of 3D effect more than other modern 28mm lenses. This lens is very suitable to pursue the taste of lens hidden under the data.

Snow day
(近所　雪の日）

夜中に降った雪が残り、美しい朝を迎えました。人通りは少ないですが、このような悪条件でも郵便配達さんはやすみません。白い雪と真っ赤なボックスのコントラストをエルマリートはクリアに写し出してくれています。

The midnight snow remaining on the road shines beautifully under the sunshine. Regardless of such bad road condition, Postman works hard. Elmarit 28mm shows clearly the contrast between snow white and red color of post carring box.

Koyasu and Kawasaki
(子安運河、川崎）

子安の運河周りには昭和を思い出させてくれる味わいのある建物がまだ残されています。じっくり時間をかけてその生活感などを写してみたいという気持ちにさせてくれます。

The Canal around Koyasu remains houses which reminds me the era of Showa when I was a child. I would like to spend more time to take photos describing the life of people in this area.

Yono Taisho Jidai Matsuri
(与野　大正時代祭り）

今や恒例となった与野の大正時代祭りです。この年はベルチオの55mmf1.5がメイン機材でしたが、このエルマリートも活躍してくれています。
非常に良い天気の一日でしたので、夕陽のもとでも十分絞ったシャープな写真になってくれています。

The Yono Taisho Jidai Matsuri is one of my most favorite event in Autumn. I used SOM Berthiot 55mmf1.5 lens as main , but this Elmarit lens has worked bery well also. Because it was a very fine day, I could
take very sharp photos with closec aperture.

Ishikawa-cho and Chukagai
(石川町、中華街）

とても寒い冬の一日でした。午前中は晴れていましたが、午後は雲が出て少し暗くなってきました。午前中の写真は絞ったものが多いですが、午後は開放にして動く人物を撮影しています。
石川町の絞った作例はとてもシャープですね。後半の中華街の作例は暗さゆえのブレもあって、やわらかくなっています。

It was a very cold day. The weather is fine in the morning but getting cloudy in the afternoon and rather darker. So, phots in the morning are closed aperture and open in the afternoon to take snap photos. I found photos at Ishikawa-cho are more sharp with closed aperture and softer at Chukagai with full aperture and slow speed.
